Learning to Fail and Ride again

-Jan 23

I gave up,
As simple as that,
For the first time, in my entire life I gave up in the middle of a competition heat.
Ok maybe 2nd time, the first time was when I cannot catch my breath anymore in a
800m breast stroke race for competitive swimming when I was like 13 or something.
But ye, in my whole time competing for 2 seasons in kiteboarding, I gave up in the last minute of my heat.

The day before, “D Day” I gave up I had an accident involving the buoy again (which by the way happens in every single kitesurfing competition I joined, ever) I really don’t know what’s up with me, and getting tangled into buoys. This time it was different, the spot here in Indonesia was a bit of a challenge for everyone, strong currents and a really nasty shore break. I do love waves, especially with an inward current to help you get that extra push to ride a surfboard easier, but not when your 20meter lines are tangled with a buoy, and kite crashing on the shore break, kite lines around your body and in my bindings which made it very challenging for me to get those lines out of my body, after a few tears and maybe a liter of sea water down my throat I managed to get out of the situation and get my board out of my feet, I was safe back in the bay.
Whew. Talk about luck eh?
But I guess, what I had was nothing; compared to my roommate Bitna from Korea who was accidently on the way of a flying fish while she was practicing for the races, the fish went straight to her leg, causing a big hole that needed to be stitched, and to my fellow Filipino teammate Jay who got caught in one of the bigger waves outside the reef, his kite ripped apart and got caught in a strong rip current, the rescue took awhile to get to him because of the huge waves and shallow reef.

Thank god, everyone made it out safe.
There were a few more incidents that really scared the shit out of us

Including another tangling incident outside the reef and some alleged shark sightings from one of the racers.

Whew, Indonesia is truly exotic especially out at sea, being notorious for its awesome surf and also dangerous at that.

It did make me think again,
Just like the Philippines, mother nature resides in the most untouched of places around the world, with all her beauty and Wrath.

So going back to my D Day, that night (last night) I was dreaming about waves, but not the good kind, waves swallowing me in and not spitting me out.

Today, I had my last heat and when I crashed my kite with a Railey to blind attempt, what seemed to be a repeat performance from yesterday’s incident, I just said, fuck that am going in.

When I managed to get my kite up (thankfully!) I just went straight to the bay, I was not feeling it anymore, I was just scared.

I felt bad about myself for giving up but hey, we have to know our limits especially if it involves being in danger in nature’s arms.

The rest of the day I just spent listening to music, launched and landed kites for the team and at the same time packed my board bag so I can bring it back to Agro Beach Resort.

Like any other sport or activity I’ve done in the past, I fuckt it up so many times.
Some were even serious like dislocating my shoulder, getting a concussion, almost landing on the trees, things like these , but the moment these things happen I just wait it out for a bit (cry a little, for being a wimp and a whiney little girl, and being stupid sometimes) but of course always ready to just brush it all off and go again.

It is also easy for me to get scared to try new stuff when I get into a really bad crash, so I knew I had to go back and go out kiting again to keep the fear away.
Also, I had to do it AS SOON AS POSSIBLE or it would really be a difficult mental battle in the future, if I waited it out too long.

I was so keen to go back to Agro Beach Resort Right away for a sunset session to end my horrible day, nothing beats going out there on your own, no competition involved but just having fun for yourself and giving it the best you’ve got at nobody’s clock, which is what all this is about.

What I truly love about this sport is it’s some sort of religion you can do on your own (some soul searching) and also go radical on do some crazy tricks if you wish (to get some aggression out at some point). Either way, it’s perfect.

This trip has proved me two errrr three things.

1.     I don’t like racing. – because of the protests and you see people lying on their faces just to keep their winnings.
2.     I have a serious case of stage fright
3.     That I function worst when I drink instant coffee.

So what is the whole point of this whole two page article am writing?

Nothing much - just to share an experience; an experience that I am very proud to have gotten over. If you ask me, and a few other people that follow the Asian tour as well; they would say, I am very unlucky on competitions, I rarely win and usually needed rescuing, but am still here. Trying my luck and testing my limits, my patience, my character which I think most of us should do, just for some kicks, laughs, new lessons to learn, a battle with yourself, and to keep our feet on the ground; a constant reminder that in competitions, winning is not everything.  J

Kiteboarding, or boardsports in general has opened doors for me to be able to travel and meet new and amazing people from all around the world. Especially other girls.that rip, like estefania from Brazil who always helps me with me riding, she is so amazing and graceful out on her kite, and in this event I was able to ride with her in a heat which was super fun to be part of. Hihihi

I am stoked on this opportunity that landed on my lap, on a random day. The day I started riding a board

PS: Don’t forget to enjoy, have fun, explore, take lots and lots of photos and keep memories on your travels

KTA - Boracay 2013

WOW! now that was a Long Busy WEEK!

A lot of speculation was going around a week before KTA Boracay
since it is almost the end of our season and the wind was a bit sketchy already.
But hence, Boracay still delivered.
it did put up to it's name as one of the most popular tropical
island destinations of the world and also one of the windiest places in Asia.

The wind started light which was good for racing and a little bit of freestyle when i can lightly use my
9m (my biggest kite sail), then it just started to blow like crazy during the last day, i was OVERPOWERED on my 5 that my bar was jsut slipping out of my hands, and some of the guys were having such a great riding session with 7 and 6s.

This tour stop showed how busy Boracay can be, especially at that time which is easter week.
I did not really participate in the race for this stop as i was really really busy with work and a lot of work plus i dont have a big kite for this.
Competing during the busiest time of the year for us, got an A on my busy bucket list.
although, at the same time it's good for the publicity of Kiteboarding in the Philippines, and the local establishments that supported this event, of course including KASBAH :)

all the photos and videos about the KTA here in Boracay showed sunny blue skies, clear blue waters, happy people, good winds and a great kiteboarding community. What more can you ask for?

I just wish we have better internet in general so we can broadcast almost on real time
but hey, it's just insanely slow.
Day5 video is not even out yet and its already almost a week after the event.
it takes a day to upload a hi res photo up on the web..
pssssss.
things like these really pisses me off.

but anyways here's the day1-4 videos from the event
As you can see, kite racing is a big thing in the Philippines,
we have very good representation on this discipline up in the podium,
to the racers of the Philippines, congratulations!!! great job.

As for us freestylers, the boys are doing well and landing bigger and better tricks with more style.
As for the women.. there are still a few of us and i really do hope more girls come in and get into freestyle and surf. X

I've made it my personal job to get my board-riding friends to go kiting but i am too busy with other things recently that i cannot get them out in the water as much as i want to. :(
Next season it is then.

PS: I really would like to be less busy and spend more time with my friends and family and i know that the only one who can do this is me. working on it.

I am only less than two months away from leaving for the USA and Europe. I am nothing more than excited to do this again for the 3rd year. and hopefully go somewhere new as well.
I really wish though some of my friends can join me on this trip!
-
Peace!

Loving Indonesia

Indonesia was ammmmazing!
In the beginning everyone thought that the wind would be light so we brought our big kites in my case that is a 9m, and i had Dirk, our Sales Manager from BEST kiteboarding bring me a 12 m which i never really got to use since it was blowing like crazy that i actually needed my 7m.

I was so stoked that there were 23 girls that joined both freestyle and racing and not counting those girls that came in for the weekend to join.

It was a good show and a good place to hang out and kite.
On the first day i went with the KTA crew to a spot just bit upwind of the competition area for a nice kicker session and a little downwinder to the competition area which was fun as i got to see some small islands along the way. I also almost ran into som SUPers which was really funny. hihihihi

The Rest of the days were so windy so we ended up with so many races and was even able to complete the doubles.
During one of the races i saw a sea turtle and a huge tuna while waiting for our start.
This was really cool. these experiences are those that make me go to these events and at the same time build some confidence in my riding skills.

While the rest of the competitors rested after the races i did enjoy the spot more by just riding over the reef and surf a little. And i must admit it was a bit too shallow but altogether fun as the direction of the wind which was side off shore was on a perfect angle to attack these baby play waves( at that time).

me and my teammate victoria was sharing a room, and we had tons of fun chatting and doing funny girly stuff.
On the last day, we did a little photo shoot with Alexandru in this nice resort/restaurant on wooden stilts that is over the water.

I finished at 9th on freestyle and 5th on race on my first international event of my season which is for me already a good result considering my riding experience compared to the rest

--
Am still a rookie at this sport and loving every moment of it.

I hope you guys are enjoying watching and reading about this as much as i do love sharing it with all of you

peace,love and good vibrations X

back to blind

I've been running around like a headless chickee AS USUAL
With this NEW and "GROWN UP" decision i made a couple of weeks back
my mood has been going up and down
and i just find myself staring at blanc spaces every so often.

In the previous post i was Derailed last january, for all the plans that didn't push through which created a domino effect in everything going on with my life right now
and currently suffering the consequences that it brought on my lap.

This lovely month of Feb, am blind. Literally blind on what lies ahead of me.
Though i really wanna do a backloop to blind in the kite right now as i am prepping up for
KTA Boracay.LOL
- sorry i jsut cant think of something more creative than this for now.

All my so-called creativity is being sucked up into one place right now and it's kinda driving me crazy.

**i really can't see the point how can companies want to keep their supposedly "creative" employees inspired when they wanna keep them clocked-in to a four wall space from 9-5pm 6 times a week. ** just wondering here a bit, and maybe somebody can give me an answer i can believe about this one.

--------

The wind has been very nice to me lately by staying at 15-20knots which is perfect for my Cabrinha SB 7m and good to practice stuff unhooked.

------

For the last couple of days

at 7am i wake up for breakfast and try to squeeze in a sched before my ITC course starts at
around 830am and ends around 4pm when the wind usually dies and i cannot go practice anymore. Am missing out on my sunset sessions because of the pile of work on my lap (AM NOT complaining ok, am jsut sayin' :) ). Am missing out on a lot of parties lately because i have to get up early and usually to tired to function and dance.. i wish there are more hours in the day so i can do more stuff like hosting a dinner for some friends. <3

AM really glad i still made it to the ABC party
(hey am not missing out on an costume party around me)
but i went home early coz am tired so i only had pics to see how Fuckt everyone was.
i really missed a good one right there.

i received roses on valentines day

well at the end am stll very happy on where i am right now
PEACE, LOVE and PASSION
